I didn’t begin my performance with the Qur’anic recitation for the sake of those in attendance, but because it was meaningful for me to start the concert with a prayer to God. The “woo” guy was simply voicing his appreciation on a musical level, but personally, I had a deeper spiritual intention than simply singing a pretty “concert opener.””

-
- Sajida Jalalzai

A Bit Cagey got a mention in a recent post on WoodTurtle, a blog about Islam and feminism. WoodTurtle interviewed ABC’s Sajida Jalalzai about their recent performance in Boston, MA. ABC opened their show with a recitation from the Qur’an, the sacred text of Islam. Sajida discusses why the band decided to begin their performance this way, and why her recitation might cause a stir in some communities.

A Bit Cagey’s Live Debut!

After months of songwriting, niggling with music software on our laptops, and tinkering with toy pianos, we finally made our live debut on March 26, 2011, in Boston, MA. Get ready for ABC.

As always, the summer has flown by and A Bit Cagey are busily working on lots of exciting new tracks for their upcoming EP. Keep an eye out for word on release dates. In other news, ABC were recently seen at a short performance in London, Ontario, where they performed covers from Bjork, Radiohead, and Reindeer Section. We’re still at work writing and rehearsing, and are planning a basement show scheduled for this winter, with more shows to follow. If you want to hear us, please send booking inquiries to booking@abitcagey.com!

Enjoy what remains of the sweet summer days. But I’ve been packing the information in and am working hard to apply new mixing concepts to A Bit Cagey’s upcoming EP. Beginning in August ABC will be switching gears from recording to rehearsing as we push to have a solid live show ready for the Fall. I have been working hard to map out the live audio so that we can create an authentic wall of sound with only the two of us manning all of the acoustic and electronic parts. In other news, we are blessed to have some talented artists helping to design some limited edition EPs; more on that in the coming months. This is an exciting time for A Bit Cagey—formative and meaningful for our future. We couldn’t be happier about the opportunities that are coming our way. As always, keep checking back for news, have a carefree Summer, and be well.

After over a week in the largest city in Africa and the Arab world, I’m slowly learning about where to find the Cairene hot spots of culture and entertainment, as well. While brushing up on my Arabic, visiting the Pyramids, and niggling with my midi controller in World-Cup-broadcasting cafes (or ‘ahwas, as they’re called in Egyptian Arabic), I’m also taking a class on Middle Eastern music, training with a maestro from a local music troupe. I’m excited to bring these new perspectives and sounds to A Bit Cagey. It’s an incredibly inspirational time for me, and I’ll be sure to keep you all updated.

Just one word to describe the final performance of Atoms for Peace at the Roseland Ballroom on April 6, 2010. We handed out our demo to fellow fans while waiting in line, and if Thom Yorke’s incredibly friendly publicist is telling us the truth, a copy of our demo is sitting in a “very grateful” Nigel Godrich’s bag. All in all, it was an amazing and inspirational experience. We’re fired up and ready to gig!

(via satiricon)

Dubbed “Crafts For A Cause,” Shapiro has recruited quite the impressive roster of artists to contribute various decorated items to be auctioned off in support of writer/director Paul Haggis’ charity organization, Artists for Peace and Justice, which is mobilizing a significant relief effort in the disaster-stricken country.

Details about when and where the auction will take place have yet to be posted, but Shapiro is publishing some exciting updates about who is involved in the meantime here. A few examples: Bright Eyes mastermind Conor Oberst is decorating a Fender Strat for the cause, Mars Volta’s Cedric Bixler-Zavala added a design to a skateboard, Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold designed a t-shirt, Vampire Weekend a gym bag, and The Strokes took a studio break to sign a tote bag.

But that’s not all! Shapiro says that many more artists are contributing items to this epic charity auction, including Devendra Banhart, Spike Jonze, Sia, Le Tigre, Mark Ronson, M. Ward and The Black Keys.

Follow “Crafts For a Cause” on Tumblr here or on Twitter here.
